Weaving a Golden Future: A Look at Mission Senehjori

Weaving a Golden Future: A Look at Mission Senehjori

Assam’s iconic "liquid gold"—Muga silk—is stepping onto the global stage. On June 2, 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched  Mission Senehjori, a ₹411-crore initiative aimed at transforming our state’s silk sector into a high-value, global luxury ecosystem.

Elevating Our Artisans

With nearly 2.6 lakh families dependent on Muga silk, this three-year mission focuses on ensuring our weavers and rearers capture the true premium value of their craft:

Strengthening Voices: The mission will establish 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and over 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups.

Guaranteeing Quality: It introduces digital, QR-coded traceability for over 8,000 households and reinforces strict GI authentication for global buyers.

Upgrading Production: Plans include five modernized reeling units and a dedicated Muga Spun Mill.

Celebrating Heritage

Beyond economics, the mission champions cultural preservation through experiential tourism, including:

The Muga Silk Trail for visitors to witness the craft firsthand.

A new Silk Tourism Park and annual  Muga Utsav festivals to showcase our heritage to the world.

By regenerating 5,000 hectares of host plants and targeting over 2,000 kilograms in annual exports by 2028, Mission Senehjori is a vital step toward securing the long-term sustainability and global prestige of our golden treasure.
