Assam's Traditional Crafts Receive Prestigious GI Tags



Assam, the enchanting northeastern state of India, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant traditions. Recently, six traditional items from Assam have been granted prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tags by the Government of India's Geographical Indication Registry. These tags recognize the unique identity, quality, and origin of these crafts, safeguarding them from imitation and ensuring their rightful place in history.


The Six GI-Tagged Assamese Treasures


1. Assamese Dhol (Pati Dhol):

   - The Assamese Dhol, also known as Pati Dhol, is a two-faced drum played with a stick and a hand. It holds immense significance in Assam's folk entertainment and culture. Last year, Assam made headlines by organizing the world's largest Bihu dance in Guwahati, where 11,298 artists performed with Dhol and other instruments, earning recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records.


2. Assamese Jaapi:

   - The Assamese Jaapi, crafted from bamboo/cane and palm leaves (tokou), is an integral part of Assam's Bihu culture. It symbolizes pride and respect. In the past, farmers used Jaapi as headgear to shield themselves from the sun and rain while working in the fields. Today, it remains a cherished tradition and a testament to Assamese folk culture.


3. Sarthebari Metal Craft:

   - Sarthebari, located in Barpeta district, is famous for its traditional handmade bell metal utensils. These utensils hold socio-cultural and religious significance. They are part of the ritual practices of the Nava Vaishnava religion advocated by Srimanta Sankardeva.


4. Panimeteka Craft (Water Hyacinth):

   - Panimeteka craft, derived from water hyacinth, showcases Assam's eco-friendly creativity. Skilled artisans transform this aquatic plant into beautiful and sustainable products, contributing to environmental conservation.


5. Mising Taat (Handloom):

   - Mising Taat, a traditional handloom craft, weaves intricate patterns and designs. It supports livelihoods and connects communities through its timeless artistry.


6. Asharikandi's Exquisite Terracotta Works:

   - Asharikandi, known for its terracotta craftsmanship, produces exquisite pottery and sculptures. These pieces reflect Assam's artistic heritage and creativity.




Impact and Significance


These GI-tagged products are deeply rooted in Assam's history, supporting nearly one lakh people directly. By securing GI status, they gain recognition on the international stage, serving as trademarks that highlight their unique qualities and origin. Assam's commitment to preserving its cultural legacy is commendable, and these crafts continue to inspire generations.


In addition to these six items, Assam boasts other GI-tagged treasures, including Muga Silk, Tezpur Litchi, Joha Rice, and more.
